Home · Awake liposuction or general anesthesia: which is better?

Awake, or under? The honest comparison.
answered by Dr. Vaibhav Desai, MD, Jonesboro.

Awake liposuction avoids general anesthesia entirely, which is the main reason people choose it, but it is not the right answer for every plan.

Awake liposuction is done under diluted local anesthetic while you stay conscious, so it avoids general anesthesia altogether: no sedation, no hospital admission, and you go home the same day. Being awake also means you can tell the physician when something is uncomfortable during the procedure. It is not the right answer for every case. The awake liposuction page has the full detail, and what suits you is decided at your consultation in Jonesboro.

Here’s exactly what happens at a first visit — and you can come and see the place before you book anything.

What actually changes

Three practical differences.

The anesthetic itself. General anesthesia is a medical event with its own risk profile and its own recovery. Removing it removes that whole category of consideration, which is the single biggest reason people ask for awake procedures.

Where you wake up. There is no hospital admission and nothing to come round from. You walk out the same day rather than being discharged.

You can talk. If something is uncomfortable, you say so and we adjust, during the procedure rather than afterwards.

What it feels like

Pressure and movement, not pain.

The area is numbed with diluted local anesthetic first. Most people describe pressure and movement rather than pain, and the sensation of the cannula working is strange before it is uncomfortable.

People worry they will feel everything. What they generally report is feeling odd, not feeling hurt.

Where it is not better

It is not the answer for everything.

Being awake does not make a procedure smaller. It does not change what liposuction can do, and it is not a route around the limits of contouring.

Some people would simply rather not be present, and that is a legitimate preference rather than a failure of nerve. If what you are describing needs more than an awake procedure can sensibly deliver, the honest answer is to say so, and we will.

Recovery

Shorter, not absent.

Without sedation there is no grogginess to sleep off, so the day ends at home rather than in recovery. That is a real difference.

The tissue recovery is the same tissue recovery: swelling, bruising, soreness, drainage in the first 24 to 48 hours, a compression garment, and a shape that settles over months. Recovery, week by week.

How to decide

The questions that settle it.

Ask what is being treated and how much work that involves, because the size of the plan is what decides whether an awake procedure is sensible.

Ask what happens if you find it uncomfortable partway through. The answer should be that we stop and adjust, which is only possible because you can say so.

Ask who is performing it and how often they do it. That question matters more than the anesthetic, and it is the one people forget to ask. Every procedure at Lux Lipo is performed by a physician.

Then ask what it will not do. A provider who only lists upsides has not given you enough to decide with. Full detail on the procedure, recovery and risks is on the awake liposuction page.

Closer to home

Awake, and near enough to get home.

Part of the choice is where you have it done. Awake liposuction is done here, at our clinic in Jonesboro, so you do not need to travel to Memphis or Little Rock for it, and you go home the same day.

You still need a ride. You are alert, but the treated area is numb and sore, so arrange for someone to drive you both ways. From Paragould that is about 30 minutes, and from Trumann about 25 minutes. If you are coming from further across Northeast Arkansas, from Blytheville, allow about an hour and 10 minutes each way and tell us when you book, so the appointment time works for whoever is driving.

Cost & financing

Cost is quoted in writing at your consultation.

Cost depends on the treatment plan you and your physician settle on, so we quote it at your consultation rather than guessing here. We offer financing.

We see patients from Jonesboro, Paragould and across Northeast Arkansas, and some travel from the Missouri Bootheel.

Questions

Asked at the desk, answered here.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Vaibhav Desai, MD. If yours is not here, call (870) 230-0844 and ask — nobody will try to book you for asking a question.

Will I feel the procedure?

Expect pressure and movement rather than pain. The area is numbed first, and because you are awake you can say the moment something is uncomfortable and we adjust.

Is awake liposuction safer?

It avoids general anesthesia, which carries its own risks, and that is the main reason people choose it. Every procedure still carries risk, and yours are discussed with you before you decide.

Can I be sedated instead?

Ask at your consultation. What is appropriate depends on the plan and on your history, and it is a conversation to have with a physician rather than to settle from a web page.

Is the recovery really shorter?

The anesthetic part is: there is no sedation to sleep off and no admission. The tissue recovery is the same, with swelling settling over weeks and the shape over months.

Is awake liposuction better than being put to sleep?

For most people it is the better fit, because it avoids general anesthesia and its recovery altogether. It is not the right answer for every plan, and your physician tells you at the consultation if yours is one of the exceptions.

Do I have to travel to Memphis or Little Rock for awake liposuction?

No. Awake liposuction is done at our clinic in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and you go home the same day. You need someone to drive you.

Come in.
Or book ahead.

A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic for you.
