Awake liposuction or fat freezing?
answered by Dr. Vaibhav Desai, MD, Jonesboro.

Awake liposuction removes fat cells in a single visit per area, while fat freezing such as CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, gradual option, and the right one depends on what change you want.

We offer awake liposuction at our clinic in Jonesboro, Arkansas. We do not offer fat freezing, so we describe it only as what it is and leave its results to the clinics that provide it. Neither one is weight loss. The procedure we do is on the awake liposuction page.

Here’s exactly what happens at a first visit — and you can come and see the place before you book anything.

Two different routes

One removes fat. One works gradually from outside.

Awake liposuction uses diluted local anesthetic placed into the area. The fat cells swell and loosen, and a small cannula removes them through tiny incisions. You stay awake, you can talk to us throughout, and you go home the same day.

Fat freezing, which many people know by the brand name CoolSculpting, is a non-surgical option. There are no incisions, and the effect is gradual rather than immediate. That is as far as we will describe it, because we do not offer it and do not publish other providers’ results.

Awake liposuction

The cells that come out stay out.

Liposuction removes fat cells from the treated area, and those cells do not come back. The cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, so the result lasts as long as your weight stays reasonably steady.

Swelling hides the change at first. The shape is assessed over three to six months as it settles, and photographs at intervals are how you compare against where you started. Individual results vary.

Choosing honestly

It depends on what you are willing to trade.

Awake liposuction suits someone with a localized pocket of fat that has resisted diet and exercise, close to a weight they are comfortable at, who wants a definite change and can accept a small procedure with a short recovery.

If what matters most to you is having no incisions at all, and you are content with a gradual effect, a non-surgical route is worth asking about at a clinic that offers it. We would rather tell you that than talk you into a procedure you did not want.

Whichever route you look at, ask the provider how many they perform in a month, which areas they would treat and which they would leave alone, and what happens if the result is uneven. For liposuction, ask who is actually holding the cannula, and ask it plainly.

Afterwards

Short, not absent.

After awake liposuction, expect fluid drainage from the small incision sites for roughly the first 24 to 48 hours, a compression garment worn as instructed, and swelling, bruising and mild soreness that ease over the following weeks. Someone needs to drive you home.

There is no general anesthesia, so there is no grogginess to sleep off. Recovery, week by week.

What neither does

Contouring, not a smaller number on the scale.

Both are about shape. If weight itself is the goal, treating that directly comes first, and medical weight loss is the conversation to have. If the skin has lost tone, removing fat underneath it will not tighten it, and that is a separate treatment such as Renuvion.

Liposuction works best close to a weight you are comfortable at. If you are hoping to lose a significant amount of weight, it is probably not the right time yet, and we would tell you that at a consultation rather than after.

Questions

Asked at the desk, answered here.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Vaibhav Desai, MD. If yours is not here, call (870) 230-0844 and ask — nobody will try to book you for asking a question.

Is awake liposuction better than CoolSculpting?

They do different things. Awake liposuction removes fat cells in one visit per area; fat freezing is a non-surgical, gradual option. Which suits you depends on the change you want and what you are willing to trade for it.

What fat removal options are there in Northeast Arkansas?

At our clinic in Jonesboro, awake liposuction under local anesthetic. We do not offer fat freezing.

Do you offer CoolSculpting?

No. We offer awake liposuction, and we will tell you honestly if a non-surgical option elsewhere suits you better.

Does fat come back after liposuction?

The cells removed do not come back. The remaining cells can grow with weight gain, so the result lasts while your weight stays reasonably steady.

Does awake liposuction hurt?

The area is numbed first, and most people describe pressure rather than pain. You are awake, so you can say the moment anything feels wrong.

Come in.
Or book ahead.

A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic for you.
