How long do you wear the compression garment?
answered by Dr. Vaibhav Desai, MD, Jonesboro.
You wear a compression garment after liposuction for as long as your physician instructs, which depends on the areas treated, and your written aftercare gives the exact timing.
It goes on before you leave the clinic, and it is doing a job rather than being optional comfort wear. At our clinic in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the timing for your plan is written into your aftercare instructions, and you can call with questions at any point. The procedure and its recovery are on the awake liposuction page.
Here’s exactly what happens at a first visit — and you can come and see the place before you book anything.
It is doing a job.
The tumescent technique puts a volume of diluted anesthetic solution into the treated area, and some of it drains through the small incision sites in the first 24 to 48 hours. Swelling follows in the weeks after. The garment supports the area through both.
Wearing it properly affects the result, which is why the instructions are specific to what was treated rather than generic.
Swelling, bruising and mild soreness are all normal in the first weeks, and the garment supports the area while they settle. It will not look like the result yet. It looks swollen, and that is not the same thing.
Snug, not painful.
It feels firm and close-fitting, which is the point. In the first days, with drainage and soreness, most people are glad of the support. It should feel snug rather than painful. If it pinches, cuts in or causes numbness that is getting worse, call rather than putting up with it.
Set for your plan, and written down.
How many weeks you wear it depends on the areas treated and how the swelling settles, so your physician gives you the timing with the rest of your aftercare rather than us publishing an average. Ask at your consultation so you can plan clothes and work around it.
Most people are back to desk work within a few days. Physical work and exercise wait for the timing your physician gives you.
Sleeping, showering, getting dressed.
Your written instructions cover when it can come off, including for showering, and how to manage sleeping in the first days. Sleep where it is comfortable rather than where you normally sleep. Walk gently and often rather than sitting still for a day and then doing too much.
Resist measuring yourself every morning. Swelling moves around, and photographs at intervals are more honest than a tape measure. Individual results vary.
Someone else drives on the day.
You need someone to drive you home after the procedure, garment on. When you can drive again depends on the areas treated and how you feel, so it is part of your aftercare rather than a published number. Can you drive after liposuction?.
Boring things, done properly.
Temporary numbness in the treated area is normal. It comes from minor nerve irritation during the procedure, sensation usually starts returning within a few weeks and keeps improving over months, and permanent numbness is very rare.
Beyond the garment, the things that help are ordinary: drink water, move gently and often, and tell us about anything that worries you rather than searching for it late at night. A short phone call settles most of it.
A direct line afterwards.
Increasing pain rather than decreasing, a fever, redness spreading from an incision, or drainage that changes character are all reasons to call the clinic on (870) 230-0844 rather than wait.
